Symphony of Stories: Making Book Week 2026 Sing, Dance and Come Alive for Little Learners

Every year the Children's Book Council of Australia gives early learning centres, schools and families a new theme to celebrate during Book Week, and this year's theme could not be more perfectly suited to what we do at Lucy Sparkles & Friends. The 2026 theme is Symphony of Stories, running from 21 to 27 August, with gorgeous artwork by illustrator Briony Stewart showing a whole orchestra of storybook characters bursting joyfully off the page. It also marks 80 years of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards, which makes this Book Week extra special.

The idea behind the theme is simple and beautiful: lots of different voices and characters, like the instruments in an orchestra, coming together to create something bigger than any one of them alone. For a program built entirely around music, movement, and imaginative play, that idea is basically our mission statement.

So this Book Week, we wanted to share some easy, joyful ways ELCs, preschools, and families across Canberra and Queanbeyan can bring the Symphony of Stories theme to life with young children, using the same music, dance, and drama tools we use in our sessions every week.

Why Little Learners Love a Musical Book Week

For toddlers and preschoolers, a theme built around sound and story is a gift, because it plays to exactly how young children naturally engage with books. Long before they're reading independently, children respond to books through rhythm, repetition, and movement. A "symphony" theme gives educators and parents permission to lean fully into that, with singing, dancing, and playful sound-making, rather than worksheets or writing tasks that are better suited to older children.

Ideas for Bringing Symphony of Stories to Life

Storybook Sound Effects:

Pick a well-loved picture book and give each page a sound. Footsteps can be gentle taps on a drum, a big gust of wind can be a long "shhhhh," a happy ending can be a triumphant clap and shout. Reading the story becomes a shared, joyful performance, and children delight in predicting the sound that comes next.

Become an Instrument in the Orchestra:

Inspired by the "orchestra of characters" artwork this year, invite children to choose a favourite storybook character and decide what instrument they'd be. A brave character might be a big booming drum. A sleepy character might be a soft, slow triangle. This is a wonderful, low-prep way to build early musical vocabulary through imaginative play, and it works beautifully as a group activity or a circle-time discussion.

A Class or Room "Symphony":

Gather whatever instruments you have on hand, shakers, drums, bells, or even just voices and clapping hands, and let each child take a turn "conducting" the room for a favourite story's mood: loud and exciting, slow and calm, silly and bouncy. It's a simple activity that captures everything the 2026 theme is about: many little voices making one big, happy sound together.

Move the Story:

Choose three or four key moments in a favourite book and turn each into a simple movement or dance. A character waking up might be a big stretch, a chase scene might be running on the spot, a happy reunion might be a group hug and a spin. This turns story time into a full-body experience, which is exactly where our programs live.
